Easy Prompts for a Gratitude and Intention Setting Journal

As a therapist, yogi, and just a human who has done it before, I know that journaling is a great habit to create. Keeping a consistent journal is a great way to process thoughts and emotions, improve mood, express and discover creativity, and more. We all have seen a million articles on it, too, from the benefits to how to do it. With that comes a million ways to do your journal. You can keep a daily log of your accomplishments, practice gratitude, use writing prompts, free flow your thoughts down on paper…the list goes on.

So, in an attempt to get back into journaling, I decided recently to challenge myself to do some simple journaling every day. It literally only takes about 5-10 minutes from my day, and I’ve noticed a pretty big shift in my mood and increase in productivity since doing so.

Uh, the winter months, they sure can be tough to get through. Long, dark days, the cold, snow, ice, and the post-holidays slump. This has become even more true for me since moving to Iceland last year.

...as with many challenges in life, I have found some new ways of dealing with the dark winter months and am managing the symptoms now. The promise of longer days and spring coming doesn't hurt either! So, in case you're also struggling a bit, here are some tips that have helped me so far:

Another year down and the move into 2018. I hope you have had a great first week of the year and had some time to relax and reflect on the year. The new year always seems to be such a time of reflection, resolutions, and change. All these goals can be a beautiful thing, but I see a lot of people on social media talking about the flaws in this and how we all should be doing this all year long. I both agree and disagree with this thought. We absolutely should not limit our reflection and goal setting to one time of year; any time is good for this and should be done several times throughout any given year. It seems like a lot of people also fall into this false belief that by the clock striking midnight on a particular night that we will all of a sudden be a different person. The reality is that the time doesn't really mean anything, and in order to see the change we want to see in ourselves we have to put in a lot of work and time.

However, on the other side of this, I'm not one to discourage others from setting goals and trying to change themselves. Even though I'm someone who does try to routinely check in on my goals and is always looking for opportunities to grow and learn, what I like about New Year's is that it's a built-in reminder to take some time to reflect and set some intentions. A nice little reminder to slow down and turn inwards.

Whatever your belief about setting New Year's resolutions, intentions, goals..whichever term you prefer, I'd like to share some tips on reflecting and setting out to kill it this year. Then, I have some of my own goals and intentions for the upcoming year.

Today, I want to talk to ya'll about cognitive distortions, the things we tell ourselves that just aren't true and not based at all on reality, and how these lead us to give up. Lately, I've been struggling quite a bit with feelings of defeat creeping up. With the big changes happening in my life, particularly starting a graduate program in a field I have very limited knowledge in, I've noticed that when I find myself getting frustrated with the process of learning something new, I often jump to just wanting to give up. 

I believe this is something a lot of us struggle with when trying something new. Maybe a new job, starting school, moving to a new place.. Putting ourselves into new situations and trying to just figure it out as we go can be incredibly aggravating and lead us to that feeling of, "Oh, fuck it! I'm never going to get this, so why try?" Read: those pesky cognitive distortions start to take hold.
